The following is our policy concerning ADHD patients. We developed this policy to assist in the ease of treatment and prescription handling for the sake of our patients and their parents.
Please call our office during regular business hours if you are concerned your child is showing signs of ADHD. We will either ask you to schedule an appointment with us or we will refer your child for formal testing. Once the written evaluation is complete, please drop it off at our office for your doctor to review. After this step, we will call you to schedule an initial ADHD visit. During this visit, we will review the results of the evaluation, answer any questions, and discuss treatment options, which may include starting an ADHD medication if that is indicated. Please bring a copy of your insurance’s prescription drug list (PDL) so we can know what is covered under your individual plan.
Due to new laws associated with the Affordable Health Care Act and HEDIS (Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set), a one-month follow-up is now required for all patients after the initial ADHD visit. Next, two 3-month follow-up visits are required to continue to receive ADHD medications. Once these requirements are met (4 visits during the first 9 months of treatment), you will be moved to an every 6-month follow-up schedule. We are sorry for the inconvenience, but this is one of the many changes in health care that we are forced to comply with to continue participation with insurance companies. In the event these visits are not kept, we will be unable to provide the prescriptions for your child’s medicine. Keeping these scheduled visits helps to ensure that the medicine will continue to be covered by your insurance, and it allows us to monitor how the patient is doing on the medication and make adjustments as necessary.
Please be aware that refilling these medications is based on Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) guidelines. Our practice must follow these guidelines with no exceptions. You must get a new prescription each time your child needs a refill of the medication. We cannot call in the refills for these medications unless your child is on a non-stimulant medication. Stimulant medications can now be prescribed electronically. In addition, if the prescription or the medicine is lost before the thirty (30) days have passed, we cannot refill the medicine for you. This is a DEA guideline.
Prior to calling to request a refill, please verify that your medication is in stock at the pharmacy of your choice. Please give us a 7-day notice to ensure that your child does not run out of medication before the refill can be sent to the pharmacy.
Due to the high volume of emergency requests, the physicians will now charge a $25 fee for any prescription that needs to be written without the above required notice. These prescriptions will be printed, and you will be asked to come to the office to collect the prescription and pay your fee. This fee cannot be filed with your insurance.
